Building a DIY boat dash panel can elevate your vessel's style and functionality. You can choose from various materials, including aluminum, stainless steel, or even carbon fiber.

Selecting the right materials is crucial, as it will affect the panel's durability and weight. For instance, aluminum is a popular choice due to its affordability and ease of fabrication.

A well-designed dash panel can also improve your boating experience by providing easy access to essential instruments and controls. By incorporating features like a waterproof display and a user-friendly interface, you can stay focused on navigating the waters.

Consider adding a backlight to your panel for improved visibility in low-light conditions. This feature can be especially useful when cruising at dusk or dawn.

Design and Aesthetics

Starboard or Acrylic?

Starboard is a good choice for dash panels because it's less expensive and tougher over time, with a matte finish that resists glare.

However, it readily shows scratches and scuffs in black, which can be a drawback. Boat Outfitters doesn't recommend using Starboard dash panels in black.

If you want to stud-mount your panel, acrylic is the way to go. Starboard doesn't work well for stud mounting and should be face-mounted instead.

Acrylic is also less prone to flex or sag under heavy displays, making it a better choice for panels with large, unsupported spans.

Face Mounts

Face-mount panels are normally supplied with mounting holes pre-drilled and countersunk for #8 flathead or oval head fasteners.

If you choose to drill your own holes, keep in mind that face-mount panels will never look as seamless as stud-mount panels.

Using matching powder-coated screws or bolts can make a big aesthetic difference, making the visible screw heads less noticeable.

The pre-drilled holes on face-mount panels are designed to accept #8 flathead or oval head fasteners, so be sure to use the right size and type of screw.

Face-Mount or Stud-Mount?

Face-Mount or Stud-Mount is a crucial decision when building and installing dash panels. There are two main ways to mount dash panels: face-mounting and stud-mounting.

With face-mounting, the screws or bolts are inserted through holes in the face of the panel, making the fastener heads visible. This method is straightforward and easy to execute.

Stud-mounting, on the other hand, allows for a cleaner aesthetic as threaded studs on the back of the panel enable mounting without visible fastener heads.

Materials and Measurements

Dash panels can be made from 1/4”, 3/8”, or 1/2” acrylic or Starboard. Thicker material is stronger and stiffer, but more expensive.

The thickness you need depends on several factors, including the support from the fiberglass dash behind it, the weight and location of the electronics and other devices, and how you use your boat.

For stud-mounting, 1/2” is the only option due to the extra thickness required for threaded inserts. A 36-foot Yellowfin running at 50 knots is a different animal from a 45-foot single diesel trawler cruising at 8 knots.

Marine-grade plastics are durable and weather-resistant, and stainless steel gives a sleek, modern look. The materials used impact not only the appearance but also the functionality and lifespan of your dashboard.
